1.2 Lipids Flashcards
What are triglycerides made of?
One molecule of glycerol and three fatty acids
What are the bonds in a triglyceride?
Ester bonds
What makes a triglyceride saturated?
No double bonds between carbons
What makes a triglyceride unsaturated?
One or more double bond between carbons.
Do triglycerides attract or repel water?
Repel because fatty acid tails are hydrophobic so they are insoluble and don’t affect the cell’s water potential.
What is the structure of a phospholipid?
- Glycerol
- Two fatty acid tails
- Phosphate group head
Which part of the phospholipid is hydrophobic and which is hydrophilic?
Phosphate head = hydrophilic
Fatty acid tails = hydrophobic
How to test for lipids?
The emulsion test:
- Add ethanol
- Shake
- Add distilled water
- A white milky emulsion if lipid is present
