Q

how does pyruvate move into/out of the mitochondria for CAC?

A

outer-membrane: not as selective, lets pyruvate through
inner-membrane: very selective, requires a transporter to allow pyruvate through

Q

what is the citric acid cycle

A

a series of chemical reactions used by all aerobic organisms to generate energy
-works by the oxidation of acetate derived from carbohydrates/fats/proteins into CO2 and energy in the form of ATP
-also contains precursors of aa and NADH that are used in other biochemical reactions (ex: electron transport chain)
-also called: tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) or kreb’s cycle

Q

what is the intermediate step?

A

the intermediate step is the step joining glycolysis and the kreb’s cycle
-the pyruvate formed in glycolysis is “inactive”, therefore it must be converted into Acetyl-CoA before the CAC can begin
