12 general wave properties Flashcards
Definition
Transverse Waves
A wave which travels in a direction perpendicular to the direction of vibration.
Definition
Longitudinal Waves
A wave which travels in a direction parallel to the direction of vibration.
Example
Longitudinal Waves
Sound
Definition
Amplitude
The maximum displacement from rest or equilibrium position. It is the height of a crest or trough measured from the normal undisturbed position.
Definition
Wavelength
The horizontal distance between two successive crests or troughs. It is equal to the distance between two successive points which are vibrating in exactly the same way.
Definition
Frequency
The number of crests or troughs that pass through a point per second. This is equivalent to the number of vibrations or complete waves generated per second.
Unit: Hertz, Hz
Definition
Period
The time taken to generate one complete wave. It is also the time taken for the crests or any given point on the wave to move a distance of one wavelength.
Formula
Period
T = 1/f
f = frequency of the wave
Definition
Speed
The distance moved by the wave in one second.
Formula
Speed
v = fλ or v = λ/T
v = speed
f = frequency
λ = wavelength
T = period
