1.2 functions of blood Flashcards
functions of blood
what does blood transport?
gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide between tissues and the lungs. Also transport hormones
What is haemoglobin
an iron-containing protein that combines with oxygen to produce oxyhaemoglobin . Can carry small amount of carbon dioxide after passing the lungs.
Red blood cells structure
have no nucleus to increase space for oxygen.
special disc shape to help the exchange of oxygen
what are the 2 types of lipoproteins?
high density (HDL) and low density (LDL)
what do lipoproteins do?
transport fat to tissues where it is needed for energy
LDL (bad)
appears to deposit fat and cholesterol in the wall of arteries.
HDL (good)
appears to prevent or reverse these harmful deposits
Hormones
eg insulin and adrenalin which are chemicals produced by glands.
They travel in blood to target organs where they trigger a response or initiate a process like fertility or growth.
Temperature regulation
- carries heat from one part body away
- blood vessels dilate (open) when hot = loses heat,
close to your skin - blood vessels constrict when cold
Preventing infection (WBC)
- engulf bacteria = neutrophils
- produce antibodies = lymphocytes
- produce antitoxins to fight poison such as vomit and diarrhoea
Blood clotting
forms blood clots to prevent excess of blood loss
what does do with waste products?
bring waste products to the kidney and the liver, which filter and clean blood.
