12 - Emergency Oxygen Flashcards
CRITICAL FACT
Emergency oxygen may be needed for non breathing patients in many breathing and cardiac emergencies. The use of oxygen in breathing adults, children and infants depends on the number of breaths per minute.
To deliver emergency oxygen, you must have:
1) An oxygen cylinder
2) A pressure regulator with flowmeter
3) A delivery device
Oxygen systems that allow the rescuer to vary the flow of oxygen.
Variable-Flow-Rate Oxygen
CRITICAL FACT
Oxygen cylinders have U.S.P. and are yellow diamond labels that make them easy to recognize. In the United States, oxygen cylinders typically have green markings.
Pressure regulator
is attached to the cylinder to reduce the delivery pressure of they oxygen to a safe level
To ensure a tight seal between the regulator and the take,
a gasket, commonly called an “O-ring” gasket, must be used.
CRITICAL FACT
Oxygen devices, such as nasal cannulas, non-rebreather masks, BVMs and resuscitation masks, allow the patient to effectively receive emergency oxygen.
Oxygen delivery device
the piece of equipment a patient breathes through when receiving emergency oxygen.
Nasal cannula
is used only on breathing patients and delivers oxygen through the patient’s nostrils. A plastic tube is held in place over the patient’s ears, and oxygen is delivered through two small prongs inserted into the nostrils.
Resuscitation mask with Oxygen inlet
Can be used with emergency oxygen to deliver oxygen to a non breathing patient, it can also be used to deliver emergency oxygen to someone who is breathing but still requires oxygen.
Non-rebreather mask
is used to deliver high concentrations of oxygen to breathing patients. It consists of a face mask with an attached oxygen reservoir bag and a one-way valve between the mask and bag to prevent the patient’s exhaled air from mixing wight he oxygen in the reservoir bag. Inhales air from bag, exhales through flutter valves.
BVM
Can be used on a breathing or non breathing patient.
CRITICAL FACT
Use emergency oxygen equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions and in a manner consistent with federal and local regulations.
