12 Core Functions for Addiction Counseling Flashcards
Learn the 12 core functions
Definition of Screening
Screening is defined by the IRC as “the process by which a client is determined appropriate and eligible for admission to a particular program.
What is the purpose of screening?
The screening function is a preliminary interview to begin gathering information about the client to determine if admission is appropriate. At the screening, it is determined if a client has a substance-related and/or co-occurring mental illness disorder.
Definition of Assessment
Assessment is defined by the ICRC as “those procedures by which a counselor/program identifies and evaluates an individual’s strengths, weaknesses, problems, and needs for the development of the treatment plan” (Herdman, 2001, p. 29).
When does assessment begin and end?
Assessment is not a static moment in the treatment process. It starts with the screening interview and continues through treatment.
Definition of treatment planning
Treatment planning is defined by the IRC as the “process by which the counselor and the client identify and rank problems needing resolution; establish agreed upon immediate and long-term goals; and decide on treatment methods and resources to be used.”
What is the goal of treatment planning
The goal of treatment planning is to integrate screening, assessment and treatment strategies into a working document. It is the engine that drives the system and becomes a dynamic individualized plan for the client’s treatment as it addresses the six assessment dimensions outlined in the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria.
Definition of counseling
Counseling is defined by the ICRC as “the utilization of special skills to assist individuals, families, or groups in achieving objectives through the exploration of a problem and its ramifications; examination of attitudes and feelings; consideration of alternative solutions; and decision making.”
What is the counselor’s primary task?
The counselor’s primary task is to motivate, empower and guide the client to identify and resolve problems that interfere in life. An effective counselor becomes a catalyst in the client’s effort to change.
Definition of case management
Case management is defined by the ICRC as “activities which bring services, agencies, resources, or people together within a planned framework of action toward the achievement of established goals. It may involve liaison activities and collateral contacts.”
What is the purpose of case management
The purpose of case management is to ensure the client receives all the services necessary to address his/her treatment needs. Case management involves the coordination of individuals and services to assist the client in the achievement of goals outlined in the treatment plan. Good case management works toward seamless, individualized treatment.
