12 - Control of Cardiac Output Flashcards
Formula for CO?
CO = HR X SV
What is Cardiac Output?
Volume of blood ejected by EACH ventricle per min
What is Stroke Volume?
Volume of blood ejected by EACH ventricle per beat
What is Vascular Tone?
Degree of vasoconstriction/dilation within the vascular network
What is Preload?
Amount of stretch experienced by cardiac muscle cells prior to contraction (end of diastole)
What is Afterload
The force the ventricle needs to overcome to open the semilunar valve and eject blood
What is Contractility?
The force produced ventricular muscle cells during systole at a given preload
What is end diastolic volume?
amount of blood in ventricle at the start of contraction (end of diastole)
What is end systolic volume?
amount of blood in ventricle at end of systole (start of diastole)
What factors affect CO?
HR & SV
What factors affect HR?
Hormones & Autonomic innervation
Venous Return
What factors affect autonomic innervation & what does it effect?
Affected by: Atrial Reflex (HR)
Effects: HR
Contractility (SV)
What factors affect SV?
EDV & ESV
How is SV calculated?
EDV - ESV
What factors affect EDV?
Preload
