17
Q

What factors affect Preload?

A

Venous Return
Filling Time

18
Q

What is Venous Return?

A

Amount of blood flow back into the right atrium

19
Q

What factors affect Contractility?

A

Autonomic Innervation & Hormones
(Nervous system & Endocrine system)

20
Q

What factors affect Afterload?

A

Vascular Tone

21
Q

What is Vascular Tone?

A

Vascular Resistance

22
Q

What are Chronotropic effects?

A

Factors which affect HR
- Autonomic Innervation
- Hormones
- Venous Return

23
Q

What are Inotropic effects?

A

Factors which affect contraction of the cardiomyocytes & thus SV

24
Q

What happens when the cardiac output is too high?

A
  • Sensors detect CO too high
  • Cardioinhibitory centre stimulated
  • Sends impulses along vagus nerve (ACh)(Parasympathetic NS activated)
  • Impulses arrive at SAN -> pacemaker cells slow down HR

CO decreased

25
Q

What happens when the cardiac output is too low?

A
  • Sensors detect more blood required by body
  • Cardioacceleratory centre stimulated
  • Sends impulses along symp NS via sympathetic ganglia (Noradrenaline) (Sympathetic NS activated)
  • Impulses arrive at SAN -> pacemaker cells increase HR

CO increased

26
Q

What is Vagal Tone?

A

Background parasympathetic activity
(Increased Vagal Tone = Decreased HR)

27
Q

What is the Atrial Reflex?

A

Stretch receptors in right atrium -> detect when more blood returning to atrium -> send impulses to medulla -> activates Symp NS -> increase HR

28
Q

What is the Frank-Starling Law?

A

Force developed in a muscle fibre is dependent on the extent it’s stretched

29
Q

What factors affect Venous Return?

A
  • Posture
  • Skeletal Muscle Pump
  • Respiratory Pump
30
Q

Effects of SNS on contractility?

A

Increases:
- Force of contraction
- Velocity of conduction (impulses from atria to ventricles)
