1.2 Compression Flashcards
1
Q
What is compression?
A
- Reducing the file size of a file so it takes up less space

- Smaller files are quicker when transferred over the internet
2
Q
Why is compression useful?
A
More data can be stored on a storage device, and transferred in a smaller amount of time
3
Q
What is lossy compression?
A
- Some of the data is lost and cannot be recovered
- Greatly reduces the file size

- Can be turned back into original format
- Can be used on all types of data
6
Q
Disadvantages of lossless compression?
A
- Is less effective than lossy compression at reducing the file size
7
Q
What is lossless compression suitable for?
A
Documents and executable files
