1.2 Classfying Matter Flashcards
What are the two kinds of pure substances?
Elements and compounds
What is a compound?
Compounds are composed of two or more elements joined chemically.
What is the law of constant composition?
If a and B are combined, the properties of the elements combined do not change.
What is a mixture?
Mixtures are a combination of two or more substances. and can be either homogenous or heterogeneous.
What are the physical properties of a gas?
Also known as a vapor. Gases have no fixed volume or shape, rather, it uniformly fills its container.
What are The physical properties of a solid?
Solids have both a definite shape and a definite volume.
What are the physical properties of a liquid?
A liquid has a distinct volume independent of its container, and assumes the shape of the portion of the container it occupies
What is the molecular composition of a gas?
Molecules have no fixed position, they are far apart, and moving at high speeds colliding with each other.
What is the molecular composition of a solid?
The molecules in a solid are in a fixed position, held tightly together, in a definite arrangement. Molecules can wiggle only slightly in A fixed position
What is the molecular composition of a liquid?
In a liquid the molecules are packed closely together but still move rapidly. Molecules can slide over one another.
How they pour.
Definition of an element
Substances that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances
What are three physical states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas
What is a heterogenous mixture?
Mixtures that do not have the same composition, properties, and appearance throughout.
Ex. Rocks and wood vary in texture and appearance in a typical sample.
What is a homogenous mixture?
Mixtures that have the same composition, properties, and appearance throughout.
Homgenous mixtures are also called solutions.
Ex. Salt dissolving in water
