1.2 Chemical Equations Flashcards
What are chemical equations?
Shows the reactants and the products in a reaction.
What does reactants mean?
Substances you start with
What does products mean?
New substances you made
What can you represent an element for?
Word equation
What is the word equation for hydrogen gas?
hydrogen + oxygen = water
reactants) (product
What happens to the chemical reaction towards the atoms?
They get re-arranged. You can investigate what happens to the mass of the reactants compared with mass of products in reaction in practical box.
What does it mean when an equation is balanced?
Same number of each type of atoms on both sides of the equation.
Why is it important to balance out a chemical equation?
Atoms cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
What does the Law of conversation of mass means?
The total mass of the products formed in a reaction is equal to the total mass of the reactants.
How can the law of conversation be broken?
Broken when reactions are carried out in open containers such as test tubes and conical flasks. Since it will lose mass when heated.
What does aq mean in state symbols?
It means aqueous solutions meaning substances can be dissolved in water.
What does precipitate mean?
A solid forms in the reaction between the two solutions.
What does 2H(squared) + O(squared) = 2H(squared) O?
Reactants:
- 4 H atoms
- 2 O atoms
Products
- 4 H atoms
- 2 O atoms
What does it mean when an equation is balanced?
There is the same number of each type of atom on each side of the balanced symbol equation.
What are the state symbols?
(s) - Solids
(l) - Liquids
(g) - Gases
(aq) - Aqueous solutions
