1.2 Cells Flashcards
Define organelle
A cell part in which functions are carried out to ensure the cells survival.
Function of the Cell Membrane
Protects the cell, Provides support
Function of cytoplasm
Contains organelles, H2O, nutrients
Function of the Nucleus (and DNA)
Controls the cells activities, contains DNA
Function of the Mitochondria
Produces energy through cellular respiration
Function of the Endoplasmic Reticulum
Transport material
Function of the Vacuoles
Storage compartments for waste
Function of lysosomes
Digest food and waste
Function of the Golgi body
Sorts protein and packs them into vesicles
Function of the cell wall
Protects the cell, provides support
Function of the Chloroplasts
Traps the suns energy and turns into chemical energy
Which of the organelles from about are found in plant cells only?
Cell wall, chloroplasts
Word equation for cellular respiration
Food(glucose)+oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water, energy
Word equation for photosynthesis
Light energy + carbon dioxide + water -> Food (Glucose) + oxygen
How are cellular respiration photosynthesis similar? different?
They both depend on the cycles to survive. Photosynthesis stores energy and cellular respiration releases energy.
Which type of organisms carry out cellular respiration? Photosynthesis?
Only animals do cellular respiration and only plants do photosynthesis
Three steps of the cell theory
The cell is the basic unit of life.
All organisms are composed of 1 or more cells.
All cells come from other living things.
Difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic Cells - has no nucleus, cell wall, smaller, and less complex
Eukaryotic Cells - nucleus, about 10 times as large and more complex
What is bacteria?
Bacteria - any of various groups of single-called microorganisms, some of which can cause a disease.
What are viruses?
Tiny non-living particles capable of reproducing only when they are in a host cell.
