1.2 Cell Structure Flashcards
To what kingdom do Prokaryotic cells belong to and how are they classified?
Kingdom of Moneras. Clasified in:
·Archaebacterioa: in extreme enviroments
·Eubacteria: traditional bacteria
Components of prokariotic cells
Cytoplasm: internal fluid
Nucleoid: were DNA in located (circular)
Plasmids: autonomous circular DNA molecules that may be transfered between bacteria
Ribosomes: complexes of RNA and protein responsible of polypeptide synthesis
Cell Membrane: semi-permeable selective barrier surrounding the cell
Cell Wall: rigid outer layer made out of peptidoglycan, maintains shape and prevents lysis
Slime capsule: thick polysaccharide layer of protection against srying out and phagocytosis
Flagella: long, thing projections containng motor protein enabling movement
Pili: hair like extensions enabling adherence to surfaces or mediate bacterial conjugation
