12/9 quiz OR questions Flashcards
how does absolute 0 apply to motion of particles
absolute zero (0K)
- temperatures can’t be below 0 Kelvin
- Kelvin measures kinetic energy
- 0 Kelvin means 0 kinetic energy
- @ 0 Kelvin there is no motion
what would happen if water reached 100 degrees Celsius and stayed constant
Vaporization will not occur so it will stay water because there is not enough energy to complete the change
how is it possible to boil warm water in a syringe without adding heat
According to a phase diagram, without changing temperature, the only way to see a phrase change is to decrease pressure. When I pulled on the syringe stopper it boiled because I decreased the pressure
why does steam cause worse burns than water?
because steam has more energy; per gram of steam @100 degrees celsius, there are 2260 more Joules of energy than water @ 100 degrees, so the steam burns worse.
