12-4) the geologic time scale Flashcards

1
Q

explain the 24 hr evolutionary model time line

A

Earth forms at midnight, 7 am earliest one-celled organisms appear, over next 10 hours jellyfish and worms appear, 9 pm some fish in the ocean appear, 10 pm reptiles and insects appear, 11 pm dinosaurs appear then go extinct by 11:30, humans evolve second before midnight

Q

what is the geologic column?

A

doesn’t signify time but convenience of names and relative positions and order in structure, creationists

Q

what are eons?

A

four major divisions in geologic column: Phanerozoic, Proterozioc, Archean and Hadean Eons. precambrian time has 3 eras (88%)

Q

what are epochs?

A

divide just the Quarternary and Tertiary periods into smaller units, names come from places where geologists first describe rocks/fossils

Q

explain the first evolutionary and creationary items to consider

A

the longest era, precambrian, fossil record sparse. Creationist view: lower rock layers are original rocks of creation, upper layers have few fossils, animals tried to reach high land during flood. lightning/sun provides energy to build amino acids but not proteins/cells which you need for living organisms. the experiment overlooked important variables similar to a rigged experiment: Started with purified materials, while in nature there is a lot if impurities. Used only safer wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation. Earth’s sun would have many harmful rays because no ozone, no organisms produce ozone, blocks damaging UV rays. Removed newly formed amino acids from experiment for protection, primitive conditions amino acid break down quickly

Q

explain the second evolutionary and creationary items to consider

A

According to evolutionists the last species of dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago at end of Ceratceaus Period, say that a large meteorite collided with Earth. If plants died causing plant eating dinosaurs to die wouldnt it seem logical that other plant eating and meat eating organisms woul dide? But may species survived, just dinosaurs went extinct, why? God saved animals by keeping male and female of each kind in the Ark, appears that the dinosaurs were excluded maybe too violent or large? Thus all died at the same time

Q

explain the third evolutionary and creationary items to consider

A

darwins natural selection: organisms with traits that are suited to a certain environment have a better chance of survival than organisms who’s traits are not suited to it, Missing links between every group of “evolving” animals
why do we have to confine God’s creations to our definitions?
We should see millions of transitional fossils for evolution to occur, Darwin believed they would all be found and said that if they weren’t found the whole premise of his theory of evolution woud be an error
