What drug is used to treat serotonin syndrome? What are the symptoms of serotonin syndrome?
Cyproheptadine (a 5-HT2 antagonist)
Symptoms: hyperthermia, myoclonus, CV collapse, flushing, diarrhea and seizures
What is amantadine used for? What are the symptoms of amantadine toxicity?
amantadine is an antiviral against influenza A and rubella but also increases dopamine release from intact nerve terminals and so can be used for Parkinson’s disease
Symptoms of amantadine toxicity are ataxia, slurred speech and dizziness
Which anti epileptic medication puts patients at the greatest risk of developing vitamin D deficiency leading to osteomalacia?
phenytoin (and to a lesser extent, carbamazepine and phenobarbital)
What drugs trigger malignant hyperthermia? What are the symptoms of malignant hyperthermia? How do you treat it?
Inhaled anesthetics combined with succinylcholine
Symtoms: hyperthermia, tachycardia, HTN, acidosis, hyperkalemia and muscle rigidity
treat with dantrolene to relax skeletal muscle and limit heat generated by muscle activity
What are the symptoms of amphetamine withdrawal?
stomach cramps, hypersomnolence, suicidal thoughts, nightmares
Which anti epileptic drug overdose is marked by severe respiratory depression?
barbiturate overdose
What are the benefits of giving midazolam IV push right before surgery?
perioperative amnesia (antegrade amnesia), sedation and anxiety relief
What is ketorolac used for?
As a supplement to opioids for pain suppression during surgery
