1.18 Adhesives and Fixings Flashcards
Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA)
Water-based adhesive used to bond most woods and wood-based materials together
Contact Adhesive
Used for bonding large areas such as sheet material
UV hardening adhesive
A clear liquid that quickly ‘cures’ to form a bond when exposed to UV light
Solvent cement
Most commonly a clear liquid called dichloromethane, which softens the polymer surfaces allowing them to fuse together
Epoxy resin
Comes in two parts (resin and hardener) that is used to join different materials together e.g. timber to metal, metal to polymer, polymer to timber
Fixture
Something, such as a clamping frame, that holds workpiece in a given position while a manufacturing process, such as welding, takes place
Jigs
A device used to control the motion of a tool such as a drill relative to a work piece; it holds the work and guides a tool, eliminating the need to repeatedly mark out
