1.18-1.24 periodic table Flashcards
how are elements arragnged in the periodic table?
-in order of increasing atomic number
-in groups and periods
how do you draw electron configuration
-the group tells you how many electrons are in the outer shell
-atomic number tells you number of electrons (unless charge is applied)
describe metals in terms of electrical conductivity
-conduct electricity
-have oxides which are basic, reacting with acids to give a salt and water
describe non-metals in terms of electrical conductivity
-do not conduct electricity (except for graphite)
-have oxides which are acidic or neutral
how is the electronic configuration of a main group element related to its position in the Periodic Table
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell.
This is why elements from the same group have similar properties.
why do noble gases not readily react?
Noble gases have a full outer shell ,so they not react with other elements.
Since their outer shells are complete, there is no instability and so there is no need to form bonds with other elements.
