11.5 Reaction mechanisms Flashcards
What is a covalent bond?
The shared pair of electrons between two atoms
What happens to bonds in a chemical equation?
Bonds are made or broken
How can covalent bonds be broken? (— Fission)
Homolytic fission or Heterolytic fission
What is homolytic fission?
When each bonded atom takes one of the shared paired of electrons from the bond
What does homolytic fission produce?
Two radicals
What do radicals have?
Atom has one single unpaired electron
What is an addition reaction?
Two reactants join to form one product
What is a substitution reaction?
Where one or a group of atoms are replaced by another atom or group of atom
What is an elimination reaction?
Removal of a small molecule from a large molecule
Produces two products (Original product and the separated molecule)
What is a heterolytic fission?
Where one of the bonded atoms take both electrons from the bond
What does heterolytic fission produce?
A negative ion and a positive ion
