What are the world health statistics?

A

WHO collects data from 194 of its member states and publishes them each year in the world health statistics, this includes data on health risks, causes of mortality and spending on healthcare .etc.

What is the downside of the annual World Health Statistics report?

A

The quality and completeness of the data is highly variable. For example WHO only receives causes of mortality data from 100 members, whilst globally 2/3 of deaths are unreported

What is the role of WHO in predicting diseases? Give an example.

A

Takes a leading role in increasing awareness of epidemics and outbreaks of new diseases such as Zika Virus in 2016, works to limit potential of pandemic. E.g.
Zika virus:
- 1.5 million cases in 2016 acorss 22 countries
- recommend delaying pregnancy for up to 1 year
- quick response to reduce diffusion of disease

Give an example of how WHO works with other agencies to deliver aid.

A

In Liberia, during he 2014-15 Ebola Virus there was a total collapse of the country’s health care system, leaving it unable to cope with a serious outbreak of measles. WHO stepped in with the UNICEF & US CDC to carry out a nation wide vaccination programme.
