1.1.3 Embedded systems Flashcards
what is a general purpose system
systems that can be used for multiple different things depending on the user
What is an embedded system
systems that have a dedicated function as part of a larger device and are built to complete a specific set of tasks
what is an embedded system meant to do
complete a specific set of tasks
what is the difference between an embedded system and a GPS
general purpose systems are versitile but arent always fully optimised to perform specific tasks, whilst embedded systems are designed to perform a small number of tasks efficiently
what is an example of a general purpose system
digital camera
vending machines
washing machines
what dont embedded systems have
An operating system
3 benefits of embedded systems
they are cheap to produce
they can be small in size
they dont need an operating system
why is being cheap to produce a benefit
Because the product will be cheaper to buy
why is being small a benefit
they can fit in smaller and more compact models
two drawbacks in embedded systems
They can only perform a limited number of functions
and are difficult to upgrade
why are embedded systems difficult to upgrade
because of their limited storage space and processing power
why are embedded systems cheap to produce
Because they require less processing power
