1.13 - Active Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion
the process by which substances move down from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration
Is diffusion not passive or passive
Diffusion is passive- it doesnt require any energy from the cell
Active transport is
movement of molecules against their concentration gradient
Is active transport passive or not
active transport its not passive it requires energy from the cell
Where does active transport always take place
always takes place across a membrane
What does active transport always require
special proteins to transfer the molecule from 1 side to the other
Where does energy for active transport come from
cellular respiration
Whats an example of where active transport is used
Root hair cells have a protrusion- this helps to absorb water and minerals
The problem is the minerals plants need - mg for chlorophyll and nitrates for proteins- are at a higher concentration inside the cell than they are outside in the soil
Therefore cannot be absorbed by diffusion
They need to be absorbed by active transport
