11.2 S Block (Group 1 + Group 2) Flashcards
1
Q
What are Group 1 and Group 2 metals known as?
A
Alkali metals
2
Q
What are the two trends for the metallic groups?
A
- Elements become more metallic as you go down the group (most reactive at the bottom).
- Elements become less metallic as you go across the period. (Group 1 is more reactive than Group 2).
3
Q
Physical Properties
A
- Very reactive. Never found in uncombined state.
Similarities: All have similar arrangements of electrons in their atoms.
Differences: As you go down the group the size of the atom increases.
4
Q
Group 2 reactions with water
A
- Vigorous as you go down the group.
- Forms hydroxide and hydrogen.
- Metal = water=Metal hydroxide + hydrogen.
5
Q
Group 2 Metal Oxides reacting with water
A
- React with water to produce an alkaline solution of hydroxide.
- Metal Oxide + Water=Metal hydroxide
- React with acids so act as bases.
- Metal Oxide+ Acid= Salt + Water
6
Q
Group 2 Hydroxides reacting with acid
A
- Hydroxides become more soluble as you go down the group.
- OH- makes it Alkaline.
- Metal hydroxide + Acid= Salt + Water.
7
Q
What is the state of hydroxides dependent on?
A
The solubility of the metal hydroxide so it can either be (s) or (aq)
8
Q
Metal Carbonates
A
- Thermal decomposition.
- Forms oxide and releases carbon dioxide.
- Metal Carbonate =Metal oxide + carbon dioxide.
- Thermal stability increases as you go down the group (more difficult to decompose, needs more heat).
9
Q
Group 2 Down (Mg-Ba) Reacting
A
Water: More vigrous reaction Thermal Stability: More stable. Solubility (OH): Increase pH of (OH): More alkaline, higher pH Solubility of Carbonate: Decrease
