11.14 Habitable planet 1 Flashcards
Initially following the big bang, what matter exist?
Hydrogen + Helium
No other chemical elements
How are stars formed?
Gravitational collapse of Hydrogen and Helium / dust
What is a star?
Spontaneous, sustained fusion reaction held together by gravity.
What determines size of sun?
Equilibrium point between force of “hydrogen bomb” fushion reaction and gravity.
What is required for fusion reactions to begin?
Very high temperatures.
This is accomplished by gravitational collapse of a sufficient mass.
When elements are produced in nucleosynthesis (from stars)?
Elements up to iron.
What causes a supernova?
When a star blows up, when it collapses due to gravity.
How do we know what elements are in the sun?
Electromagnetic spectrum, specific wavelengths are blocked.
