How does growth of population affect identity
Newcomers make longer term residents feel like they’ve lost their community
Their sense of identity feels threatened
Waiting times at doctors increase and schools may be oversubscribed so people may feel they lose identity as they don’t have easy access to basic services
How do cultural changes affect identity
Long term residents may feel alienated by the new languages, shops, clothing and celebrations
Migrants feel more at ease
Many people see these changes positively and welcome diversify, younger residents may be less concerned about change vs those who have lived there a long time
How does population decline affect identity
Shops, schools and churches close which has given a place and its people identity (in North Antrim)
How does changing age structure affect identity
Older population changes identity of area as they may prefer a peaceful community whereas younger people are more open to change
