11.1 Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a saturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon which contains single carbon-carbon bonds only
What is an unsaturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon which contains at least one multiple carbon-carbon bond
e.g. double bond or triple bond
What is a straight-chain hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon which contains one continuous carbon chain only
What is a branched-chain hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon which contains a shorter side chain bonded to a longer continuous carbon chain
What is an alicyclic hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon which contains carbon atoms joined together in non-aromatic rings with or without side chains
What is an aromatic hydrocarbon?
An unsaturated hydrocarbon which contains a benzene ringgit
What is a homologous series?
A family of hydrocarbons with the same functional group whose successive member differs by the addition of CH2
What is a functional group?
A group of atoms in a compound that are largely responsible for the compounds chemical properties
What is general formula?
The simplest algebraic formula of a member of a homologous series
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing hydrogen and carbon only
Give three reasons why carbon forms a large number of compounds
- Carbon can form single double and triple covalent bonds
- Carbon can from bonds with itself to form a longer chain
- Carbon can form bonds with other molecules
