11 : Waves 1 Flashcards
Progressive waves
Oscillations that travel through matter - they transfer energy from one place to another particles in the matter vibrate they do not move along the wave
- sound is a progressive wave
- vibrations travel to your ears but air particles do not they vibrate in a plane parallel to the direction of energy transfer
- when it travels through a medium the particles in the medium move from equilibrium position particles in the medium exert forces and displaced particle experiences a restoring force and pulled back to its original position
Transverse waves
Oscillations or vibrations perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
- have peaks or troughs where the oscillating particles are at a maximum displacement from their equilibrium position
- surface of water
- EM wave
