HEALTH

- Health is the protection of the minds and bodies of people from illness resulting from the materials, processes or procedures used in the workplace

Give a brief definition of SAFETY
A
- Safety is the protection of people from physical injury.
- The borderline between health and safety is ill defined and the two words are normally used together to indicate concern for the physical and mental well-being of the individual at the place of work

Give a brief definition of WELFARE
A
- Welfare is the provision of facilities to maintain the health and well-being of individuals at the workplace.
- Welfare facilities include washing and sanitation arrangements, the provision of drinking water, heating, lighting, accommodation for clothing, seating (when required by the work activity or for rest), eating and rest rooms.
- First-aid arrangements are also considered as welfare facilities

A
- POLICY – written statement of Intent, procedures and commitment to HSW. Assigns responsibilities and explains duties etc.
- ORGANISING – Structures to assist in:

- Competence - PLANNING and IMPLEMENTATION
Establish, operate and maintain systems that:
- Identify objectives and targets
- Set performance standards

- Sustain positive safety culture - MONITORING – Active and Reactive systems:
Active: Measuring achievements against specified standards before things go wrong. Ensures controls are working correctly.
Reactive: Collection of information about failures. Involves learning from mistakes. - REVIEW and AUDIT – Ensures policy is being carried out and is having the desired effect.
