What is CER used for?
It is used for scientific argumentation.
What are all living things required to have to be considered living?
Metabolism, Genetic Material, and a container
What is program in PMC?
Program is the genetic material like DNA and RNA.
What is Metabolism in PMC?
Metabolism is the energy that all living things are required to have.
What is container in PMC?
Cell membrane.
Give an example of a CER response.
Air is matter (claim). We found that the weight of the ball increased each time we pumped more air into it (evidence). This shows that air has weight, one of the characteristics of matter (reasoning).
Is a virus living or nonliving? Why?
Viruses are not a living thing. There are multiple ways that it can be proven that viruses are not living. Including mostly the M category of PMC, which is the growth, waste production, and need for an energy source category. If you look at the table, you will see that the influenza virus and the adenovirus have no energy source whatsoever, nor do they have waste production or any sort of growth. Now if you take a look at any living thing on the table, it at least has an energy source. This is because in order to be living, you have to have metabolism, and without an energy source, there is no metabolism. So because there is no energy source for either virus, there can not be any metabolism, which means that viruses are not living. There are also factors like the fact that the Influenza virus and the Adenovirus have to have a host to reproduce while living things use either sexual or asexual reproduction.
