1.1 - plate boundaries Flashcards
what is a natural hazard?
potentially damaging physical event, which may cause loss of life, property damage, social and economic disruption, or environmental degradation
Types of natural Hazard?(17)
Earthquake, volcano, tsunami, hurricane, tornado, heat wave, avalanche, forest fire, drought, flood, acid rain, blizzard, sand storm, land slide, hail storm, mudslide and sink hole
what are the main classifications of natural hazards?
Atmospheric, biological, geomorphilogical, tectonic.
What are man - made hazards?
Events that are caused by humans and occur in/close to settlements.
what is a disaster?
the realisation of a hazard when it causes a “significant” impact on a vulnerable population.
What is the order of the Earths structure?
Crust, Mantle, Outer core, Inner core
What are the two types of crust?
Continental and oceanic
Where do earthquakes origin from?
At the edge of a tectonic plate.
What is a conservative plate boundary?
moving in opposite directions.( 2 continental)
What is a constructive plate boundary?
Moving away from each other ( 2 oceanic)
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Moving towards each other. ( Oceanic and continental, Oceanic moves under continental)
What is a collision plate boundary?
Moving towards each other ( 2 continental which move up)
where are most earthquakes found?
in clusters along the ring of fire.
What are intra - plate earthquakes?
earthquakes linked to ancient faults ( Rhine rift valley).
what is the violence of the eruption dependent on?
the quantity of dissolved gases in the magma.
