Q

What are the benefits of our atmosphere?

A
  1. It absorbs harmful solar UV radiation.
  2. It absorbs harmful X-rays and gamma-rays from space.
  3. It regulates the temperature so we rarely experience ‘extremes.’
  4. It provides us with oxygen to breathe.
  5. It partly protects us from meteoroids.

Q

What are the advantages of having telescopes high up in the sky?

A
  1. No atmosphere to blur images.
  2. No light pollution.
  3. No adverse weather problems.
  4. Longer observing periods.

Q

What are some of the drawbacks of our atmosphere?

A
  1. Light refracts which makes stars “twinkle” which distorts resolution.
  2. The selective scattering of the shorter (bluer) wavelengths of sunlight by gas molecules in the atmosphere make the sky appear blue preventing astronomers from observing during the day.
  3. The absorption and reflection of the majority of electromagnetic radiation from space.
