1.1 Partical and waves 1 ( refraction of light ) Flashcards
what is defraction defined as ?
the change in speed of light as it travels from 1 transparent material to another.
what does refractive index tell us ?
it tells us how much light will change in speed and therefore change in direction.
what is refractive index?
the rate of the sin of the angle of incidence in a vacuum to the sin of the angle of reflection in the medium.
what happens to frequency in a new material?
remains the same as it is a constant.
what happens when the refractive index is increased?
the greater the change in speed and direction.
what is the refractive index of air and in a vacuum ?
1
what colour refracts the most and least in the visible spectrum?
most-violet
least-red
note : use ROYGBIV
what is total internal reflection?
the light is reflected within the object as the incident ray of light is greater than the critical angle.
does light bend towards or away from the normal when traveling from glass to air ?
away from the normal.
what happens when the incident ray is in air ?
it is refracted.
