1.1 Moles and Molar Mass Flashcards
What is an atom?
The basic unit of matter that makes up all elements
What makes up an atom?
Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
Position and charges of the subatomic particles?
Protons and neutrons are located in the center of the nucleus, while electrons orbit the nucleus. Protons are positively charges and neutrons are neutral which means the nucleus is overall positive. Electrons are negatively charges and counteract with the positive center of the atom.
What is a mole?
A mole is a unit of measurement for particles in a substance, like a dozen is a unit of measurement for eggs.
What is molar mass?
Molar mass is the number of grams there are in a mole.
Atomic Number
The atomic number represents the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that element. This number is found above the element’s symbol on the periodic table.
Atomic Mass
This is the mass of one atom of the element in atomic mass units (amu). This number is found below the element’s symbol on the periodic table.
Avogadro’s Number
Just as a dozen eggs contains 12 eggs, a mile contains 6.022 x 10^23 particles.
