Why did jesus have to be divine

A

In order for him to save humanity from sin, jesus had to be divine as only God had that redemptive power.

Q

Possible solutions to jesus’ nature?

A

Theologian Karl Rahner suggest a genuinely human consciousness must have an unknown future

-if jesus had his father’s awareness of all time, he can hardly be called human

Rahner’s solution =onion
= Onions has many layers of skin so maybe esus’ human self awareness was top layer and deeper layers were his divine consciouness

Q

C.S Lewis rejected anyone who accepted jesus as a teacher but not the son of God; quotes..

A

‘A man who is merely a man and said the sorts of things jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg’’

= u cant expect half of jesus what about the other things born from a virgin, came from dead. U cant pick and choose what u want from jesus

Q

What day was it on that jesus heals a man born blind John 9

A

On Sabbath thereby breaking a Jewish law- this shows that jesus was willing to break the rules of the day in order to do the right thing.

The Pharisees investigated and found he was actually blind = but they still rejected = shows these miacles were not accepted by the ppl

Q

Key quote when jesus heals a man born blind John 9

A

‘this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him’

17
Q

David Hume

A

The evidence of miracles not happening far
outweigh the evidence that they do. We need
to look at events and consider what is most
likely. Miracles are the ‘least likely of
events’, also ‘extraordinary events
require extraordinary evidence’

18
Q

Edward SchillebeeckxIf

A

Jesus’ miracles can be interpreted as having a spiritual or metaphorical meaning, not just a literal one calming storm = source of calm

19
Q

If accepted, what do the miracles suggest about Jesus?

A

his power over nature
Miracles = things only God can do
Reinforces Jesus’ message that he is God’s Son

20
Q

Who discusses the idea that it is perhaps more important to ask what we think Gospel writers are doing in reporting miracles in their book ‘Jesus and the Victory of God’?

A

N. T. Wright

21
Q

N.T. Wright

A

Jesus healing people who have been excluded - Jesus was showing power to unite all Israel for renewed covenant and forgiveness of sins to inaugurate a Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.

His interpretation jesus’ miracle show a greater authority than simply power to alter the way the universe works

22
Q

Humes essay on …… argued that because we have no present day, …… experience of miracles = not …… to say that jesus …. on water

A

Miracles

23
Q

Resurrection

A

Wright suggests that the belief that jesus rose from the dead was the reason why jesus disclipes regrouped and rapidly changed their traditional worship (jewish) to focus on christ

24
Q

sig of resurrrection?

A

For paul Jesus was not resurrected then all preaching would be in vain. Sin would not have been washed clean and at death all would perish
- Discloses God in a new and startling way = focus on suffering, new life and unconditional love
- Certainity in the future kingdom of god
-
