1.1 - Introduction to cells Flashcards
Emergent properties are properties that occur in what type of organism?
Multicellular organisms
What properties are caused by the interaction between component parts of a complex structure?
Emergent properties
What are the functions of life?
Metabolism
Reproduction
Nutrition Homeostasis Response Excretion Growth
All functions of life are performed by a single cell in which organisms?
Unicellular organisms
The expression of some genes and not others refers to what?
Cell differentiation
Cell differentiation allows the development of which types of cells?
Specialised cells
What are the main uses of stem cells?
Embryonic development and therapeutic uses
What types of stem cells be obtained?
Embryonic stem cells, cord blood stem cells, and adult stem cells (usually born the bone marrow)
What does cell theory state?
All living organisms are composed of cells; the cell is the basic unit of life; cells arise from pre-existing cells
What is the key factor in cell size limitation?
Surface area to volume ratio
Why does surface area to volume ratio limit cell size?
Small surface area causes problems for transport across the cell membrane. Therefore, if the ratio is too small = substances don’t enter the cell as quickly as required and waste products accumulate; cells may overheat as metabolism would produce heat faster than it is lost over the cell’s surface
As cell size increases, what happens to the surface area to volume ratio?
The surface area to volume ratio decreases
