1.1 introduction to biological molecules Flashcards
How to atoms form covalent bonds to form molecules?
Atoms share a pair of electrons in their outer shells. both atoms have full outer shells and a stable molecule is formed.
How to atoms form ionic bonds to form molecules?
ions with opposite charges are attracted to eachother. this electrostatic attraction is known as an ionic bond. weaker than covalent bonds.
how to atoms form hydrogen bonds to form a molecule?
molecules often have an uneven distribution of charge (polar molecule). the negative region of one polar molecule is attracted to the positive region of another polar molecule and a weak electrostatic bond is formed.
What is condensation polymerisation?
A reaction joining together individual monomers to form a polymer and water.
what is hydrolysis?
Breaking down a polymer into monomers by the addition of water.
what is metabolism?
All the chemical processes that take place in a living organism.
