Q

Write a CER as to if a virus is alive. Defend your claim.

A

I believe that viruses are not living things. First of all, these viruses do not have a source of energy or produce waste. All living things need energy to survive. The viruses need a host to replicate unlike most living things. They also both only have either just RNA or just DNA. When looking through the chart every living thing, excluding the human red blood cell, has both. Another thing on the chart that every living thing has is a carbon source except the viruses and the computer. Everyone knows a computer is not living and viruses have a lot in common with them in the chart. Viruses also do not respond to stimuli unlike most things. For the most part all living things have Nucleic Acid, Proteins, Lipids, and Carbohydrates. The two viruses either lack a few or many. While lots of living things may lack one or two things on the chart, the combinations of missing elements cause me to classify a virus as non living.
When looking at the chart you can also see a pattern. All living things with the exception of the human red blood cells have at least 7 of the characteristics.
