1.1 Intro to Biology Flashcards
What is a claim?
A conclusion that answers the original question or problem
What is evidence?
Pieces of data that support your claim
What is reasoning?
An explanation of how the data or evidence supports your claim
Write a CER response to: Are viruses living/dead.
Example of very simple CER response:
I believe that viruses are not living things. Some evidence that supports this claim includes the fact that viruses simply do not have enough traits that most living things do have. For example, viruses do not require an energy or carbon source to survive. They also do not grow or produce any waste. All living things - for example: dogs, humans, etc. - need energy and carbon to survive. Also, if they consume things, they need to produce waste. Most living things also grow, which is important in helping it mature and eventually die.
What does PMC stand for?
Program, Metabolism, and
What does CER stand for?
Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
Why is program important for living things?
A living thing needs its programming, its DNA/RNA to survive and function.
Why is metabolism important for living things?
A living thing must be able to use the energy they consume to grow and function.
Why is container important for living things?
All living things need a container to keep them up and keep all the thing they need inside - for example, humans and animals have skin, cells have membranes, etc.
What are some example of abiotic things?
Ex: river, book, wood, fossil, milk, rock, tornado, sun, sliced turkey, etc.
What are some examples of biotic things?
Ex: humans, bacteria, mold, sea anemone, corn, etc.
What is the smallest level of organization?
Atom
What are some examples of population?
White-tailed deer in Tippecanoe County
What are some examples of a biome?
Tundra
What are some examples of an atom?
Carbon
