11 Group 2 Flashcards
As you go down the group (radius)
The atomic radius increase
The ionic radius increases
As you go down the group (boiling pt, melting pt)
It goes down, but there is a dip at Mg because Mg is loosely packed and hence requires less energy to break
Density trends
Decreases from beryllium to calcium and then increase to barium
Group reactivity increases becauseeeee
-Greater shielding effect provided by extra inner shells of electorns
-The larger distnace of the outermost electrons from the nucleus
They combust readily, so what flame colour do they form?????
White, white, brick red, scarlet/red, apple-green
Metal reaction with water forms
Metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas
Is Beriyllium and Radium considered?
NO
group 2 oxide solubility in water does what??????
It increases down the group.
hence, more hydroxides are formed,
Therefore, increasing the pH value
Hydroxide + dilute acid gives u?
salt+ water
Carbonate react with dilute acid to form….
salt+water+carbon dioxide
The solubility of sulphates
decreases down the group
Thermal decomposition of carbonate
form metal oxide and carbon dioxide
Thermal decomposition of nitrate
form metal oxide and nitrogen oxide and oxygen
thermal stability increases down the group, why???????
-carbonate ion has a relatively large ionic radius, so easily polarised by small cation
-group 2 cations increase in ionic radius down the group
-small the ionic radius of cation, the better it is at polarising the carbonate ion
-the degreee of polarisation decreases
