11. Development Blasting Flashcards
Advantage of cut close to sidewall?
better exploitation of drilling pattern with less holes/round
Advantage of cut in the middle and low?
less throw and less explosives
Advantage of cut in the middle and high?
easier muckpile loading but more explosives and drilling required
When is stemming used underground?
if airblast is an issue
Why is stemming typically not used underground?
needs air loader, no cost benefit, can’t clean out misfires, must drill another hole if misfire
What is the purpose of cut?
initial expansion area for blast holes to break towards
What is the purpose of perimeter holes?
protect the perimeter area of the drift
What is the purpose of lifters?
break to grade and smooth working floor
What is the purpose of shoulders and erasers?
fragmentation and advance
What are the 4 parameters for good advance?
- large empty holes
- distance between the blast hole and empty hole < 1.5 x diameter of empty hole
- charge concentration
- drilling precision
15% rule of thumb?
a minimum 15% of open area for expansion factor of rock (the more the better)
What are 4 limiting factors to good advance?
- time
- tunnel space
- diameter of holes must be compatible with equipment
- parallel holes permit deeper rounds
Normal Profile Blasting
- typical of mines
- rough/irregular/cracked profile
Smooth Profile Blasting
- typical for road and rail tunnels
- close drill holes + weaker explosives
What are the 4 development design requirements?
- accurate drilling
- proper burden and hole spacing
- proper initiation sequencing
- proper charge concentration
