1.1 Cycle Of Life Flashcards
Six fundamental processes of embryogenesis
1) Fertilization
2) cleavage
3) gastrulation
4) organogenesis
5) metamorphosis
6) gametogenesis
Embryogenesis
The stages of life between fertilization and birth/hatching.
Cleavage terms
1) Blastomeres - The smaller cells formed from the rapid mitotic division of cleavage.
2) Blastula - The sphere of cells formed by the Blastomeres by the end of cleavage.
Cleavage
A series of rapid mitotic divisions immediately following fertilization. Each of those smaller cells is called a Blastomeres. By the end of cleavage, the Blastomeres have formed a sphere called the blastula.
Fertilization
The fusion of each mature egg cell with each mature sperm cell.
Fertilization terms
1) Zygote - the fertilized egg (I.e, fused with the mature sperm).
