Inmates exploited for their labour and kept under harsh conditions
Aim was to contain prisoners in one place, however many inmates died in these camps
Transit camp
Camps where prisoners were briefly detained prior to deportation to other Nazi camps
Unsanitary, awful, poor facilities and overcrowding
Sometimes run by local collaborator in the countries they were based
Death marches
From Autumn 1944, as German forces pulled back, the Nazi regime carried out a frantic programme of evacuations and marches
Inmates of camps sent on long marches westwards away from the advancing Red Army
Inmates malnourished, had bad clothing and footwear, and were in freezing conditions
Any inmate who failed to keep up with the required pace was shot dead
