11) Complementary Therapies Flashcards
What is complementary medicine?
Involves any medical system based on a theory of disease or method of treatment other than the orthodox science of medicine as taught in medical schools
Why do people access complementary medicines?
- Persistent symptoms
- Real or perceived adverse effects of conventional treatments
- Preference for ‘holistic’ approach to their problem
- May feel they receive more time and attention
- High level of satisfaction reported (probably getting conned tbh)
What are some of the main concerns a doctor may have about patients using complementary therapies?
- Patients may see unqualified practitioners
- May risk missed or delayed diagnosis
- May refuse conventional treatment
- May waste money on ineffective treatments
- The mechanisms of some complementary treatments is so implausible it cannot work, e.g. homeopathy
What are some of the issues with the evidence base for complementary medicines?
- Hard to generate funding
- Trial of single intervention may not reflect reality
- Difficult to make double-blind
Suggest some reasons for NICE initiating research into complementary therapies.
- High public interest
- Half GPs provide access
- Could address inequalities in access/opportunity
- Should apply same standards
- NICE could stimulate more/higher quality research
Suggest some reasons against NICE initiating research into complementary therapies.
- Money in NHS limited
- NICE has higher priorities
- Poor quality evidence
Describe the process of aromatherapy.
The controlled use of essential oils, which have therapeutic properties such as relieving stress, easing tension, improving health and promoting a sense of wellbeing.
Suggest how aromatherapy may work? (spoiler…it doesn’t)
Stimulating the limbic system of the midbrain, which releases hormones that influence mood.
Describe some proposed benefits for clove oil, yarrow oil and basil.
- Basil – sharpening concentration, uplifting effect on depression, relieve headaches and migranes
- Clove oil - topical analgesic, especially useful in dentistry
- Yarrow oil - reduce joint inflammation and relieve cold and influenza symptoms
