1.1 Chemical Bond: Basic Concepts Flashcards
What is a chemical bond?
A chemical bond is the force that holds the atoms of a compound together.
Types of chemical bond
Ionic, covalent, and metallic.
What characterizes an ionic bond?
The transfer of electrons from one atom to another, forming ions.
It is generally formed between metals and nonmetals.
What characterizes a metallic bond?
It occurs exclusively between metallic atoms of the same element, which generally form solid, highly compact structures. It is a strong bond that binds the atomic nuclei together, surrounded by their electrons, like in a cloud.
What is a covalent bond?
A bond formed by the sharing of a pair of electrons between two atoms.
It occurs between nonmetallic atoms.
