Q

What is the biosphere?

A

It is the thin layer of air, land, and water on or near Earth’s surface where living things exist.

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Tundra Biome? (3)

A
  • located in the upper northern hemisphere
  • very cold and dry
  • due to permanently frozen soil (permafrost), plants are short and there are few trees

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Boreal Forest Biome? (3)

A
  • found in the far north
  • below freezing half the year
  • mainly coniferous (cone-bearing) trees

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Temperate Deciduous Forest Biome? (3)

A
  • located in temperate regions
  • trees lose their leaves in the Winter
  • large seasonal changes with four distinct seasons

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Temperate Rainforest Biome? (3)

A
  • found along coastlines where ocean winds drop large amounts of moisture
  • cool and very wet
  • trees (mainly evergreens) grow very tall

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Grassland Biome? (2)

A
  • occurs in temperate and tropical regions

- covered in grasses that have deep roots that are well adapted for drought

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Tropical Rainforest Biome? (3)

A
  • found in a wide band around the equator
  • wet and warm year-round
  • there is growth of a dense canopy of tall trees

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Desert Biome? (4)

A
  • occur in temperate and tropical regions
  • days are hot and nights are cold
  • rainfall is minimal
  • plants and animals are adapted to reduce water loss

Q

What are the main characteristics of the Permanent Ice Biome? (2)

A
  • includes polar land masses and large polar ice caps

- the few animals that live here are well isolated against the extreme cold

13
Q

What is latitude and what does it influence (and how)?

A
  • the distance north and south from the equator

- it influences both temperature and precipitation, tropical zones have very warm temperatures and high precipitation

14
Q

What is elevation and what does it influence (and how)?

A
  • it is the height above sea level
  • higher elevation have less air and retain less heat (temperature)
  • windward sides of mountains are wet, leeward sides are very dry (precipitation)

15
Q

What are ocean currents and what does it influence?

A
  • ocean currents carry warmth and moisture to coastal areas

- temperate biomes are found where warm currents meet land

16
Q

What are adaptions?

A

Characteristics that allow an organism to better survive and reproduce, many characteristic biotic factors have a special adaption for their biome

17
Q

What are the 3 types of adaption?

A
  • structural adaption
  • physiological adaption
  • behavioural adaption
18
Q

What is structural adaption, and give one example?

A
  • physical feature that helps an organism survive

- eg. a wolf has large paws for traveling in snow

19
Q

What is physiological adaption, and give one example?

A
  • physical or chemical event inside the body of an organism that helps it survive
  • eg. a wolf maintains a constant body temperature
20
Q

What is behavioural adaption, and give one example?

A
  • behaviour that helps an organism survive

- eg. wolves hunt in packs to hunt large prey

21
Q

What do climatographs show?

A
  • the average temperature and precipitation for a location over a period of 30 years or more
22
Q

What do (red) lines on a climatograph represent?

A

Temperature

23
Q

What do (blue) bars on a climatograph represent?

A

Precipitation
