Standard of Living
A measure of the mind a quality of goods and services available to a group of people
Regional disparities
Differences in the standard of living in different areas if the country
Public Works
Government funded projects to build schools, hospitals, roads and other public resources
Anti-Semitic
To have prejudice and/or to discriminate against Jewish people
Refugees
People who leave their home country because of a fear of persecution due to race, religion, nationality or beliefs
Deportation
The expulsion or exile of someone from a country
Capitalism
An economic system based in the private it corporate ownership of business;
- driven by the goal of increasing profits for business owners and shareholders
- advocates minimal government control of the economy
Democratic socialism
A political movement that recommends significant government intervention in the economy and government ownership of key industries in order to bring about greater political, economic, and social equalities in society
Minority Government
Occur when a political party wins the most seats but not a majority of the seats in the HoC.
- minority governments have less bower and must negotiate with the opposing parties to pass laws and stay in power
Welfare state
A county in which government funded programs help to insure that all citizens have a minimum standard of living
Equalization payments
Transfers if money from the federal government to provinces with lower tax revenues; intended yo make standards of living in all provinces equitable
Universal program
Social programs in which all Canadians regardless of their income recieve benefits
Medicare
A national health care program paid for by tax dollars and administered by provinces
Baby boom
A sudden and large increase in birth rates
Great Depression
A world wide economic downturn in the 1930’s
