1.1 - 2.7 Flashcards
What are the 8 characteristics of living organisms? ( MRS C GREN)
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Control
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
What is movement?
The ability of an organism to move
What is respiration?
The chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose
What is sensitivity?
Responding to changes in the enviroment
What is growth?
An increase in size and mass of an organsim
What is repoduction?
Producing offspring
What is excretion?
The process by which toxic waste materials are removed from and organism
What is nutrition?
Acquiring nutrients, either by eating (animals or photosynthesis (plants)
What is controlling internal environment (control)?
Also known as homeostasis.
Temperature, water levels, salt content are kept constant by the body.
What is a unicellular organism?
Only one cell
What is a multi cellular organism?
More than one cell
What are eukaryotic cells?
- They have membrane-bound organelles.
- Their genetic material is enclosed in a nucleus
- They include: Animals, plants, fungi and protoctitists
Describe the common features of a plant.
- Multicellular organisms
- They have a cellulose cell walls (store carbohydrates e.g sucrose or starch), vacuole, chloroplasts (photosynthesis)
- They also have ribosomes, mitochondria, cytoplasm and a cell membrane
Describe common features of animal cells
- Multicellular organisms
- They do NOT contain chloroplasts so they cannot carry out photosynthesis, they have no cell walls (only cell membrane)
- They usually have nervous co-ordination so they are able to move from one place to another
- They often store carbohydrates as glycogen.
Describe the common features of fungi.
- Not able to carry out photosythesis
