1.1 - 1.3 Types of Data & Key Terms Flashcards
Define subject.
people, objects, or entities included in a study
Define variable. What are the different types of variables?
a characteristic of an individual to be measured or observed in a study
*numerical (quantitative) variable - has observations with numerical value on which meaningful mathematical operations can be performed
- discrete: possible values form a set of separate numbers
- continuous: possible values form an interval including fractions and decimals
*categorical (qualitative) varaible - has observations which describe an individual with a category or group
- ordinal: possible values form a set of categories that can be ordered (ex. poor, average, excellent)
- nominal: possible values form a set of categories for which ordering does not makes sense (ex. favorite foods)
Define population.
the set of all individuals of interest
census - collects data from the entire population
population paramater - a numerical measure that describes the population
Define census.
collects data from the entire population
Define sample.
a manageable subset of the population
sample statistic - a numerical measure that describes the sample
Define observation.
a single response
Define parameter.
a numerical measure that describes the population
Define statistic.
a numerical measure that describes the sample
What is the notation for sample size? What is the notation for population size?
n; N
What is the notation for sample mean? What is the notation for population mean?
x̄; u
What is the notation for sample standard deviation? What is the notation for poulation standard deviation?
s; δ
What is the notation for sample median? What is the notation for population median?
˜x; n
What is the notation for sample proportion? What is the notation for population proportion?
p̂; p
