10s Flashcards
1st
Clearing intersections, keeps you alive at intersections.
At intersections scan ahead. Look left, right, left. Get the big picture to look for pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, and vehicles. Prior to entering intersection I check my traffic side mirror. After crossing the intersection I will check the opposite mirror.
2nd
When stopped in traffic, have an escape route. Leave a car length of space bumper to bumper. If it becomes disabled I will have room to maneuver around that vehicle. The longer my vehicle the more space needed.
3rd
Count 1-2-3 after vehicle has started to move to keep away from billboards. This establishes a space cushion and enables me to bring my eyes to the driving scene ahead.
4th
4 - 6 second following time for speeds up to 30MPH, 6 - 8 seconds over 30 MPH, buys time. When the vehicle ahead of you passes a stationary object count 1/1000 one, 1/1000 two, 1/1000 three, until the front number of my vehicle reaches the item.it gives me time to act to any changing conditions.
5th
8 - 12 seconds of lead time centers car in traffic lane. Pick a stationary item and count 1/1000 one, 1/1000 two, 1/1000 three until the front bumper reaches the item. This measures the eye lead time and maintains depth of vision.
6th
Scan steering wheels so that you can take the path of least resistance. Scanning steering wheels shows two hazards that could happen. Exiting the vehicle or pulling in front of you. You can also look for wheels turned out, tail lights on, exhaust coming from tail pipe. If you can’t tell treat it as though it is occupied.
7th
Be prepared at Stale green lights because you want smooth stops and turns. Stale green light is a green light I didn’t see turn green. Which means it can change at any minute. I make a decision point in which I decide when it is too late to slow down for a stop accounting for road, load, weather, and speed
8th
Eye contact, establish eye to eye contact by using your horn, lights, and signals. Always establish eye contact with pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, and other vehicles.
9th
When pulling from the curb communicate in traffic with your horn, lights, and signals. I start by signaling my intentions, checking my traffic side mirrors, and look over my shoulder.
10th
Use your mirrors and gauges but keep your eyes ahead of car. I check my mirror every 5 - 8 seconds to check traffic conditions, lane position, and mechanical issues. I check gauges on and off checking mirrors. I always return my eyes to the front after checking mirrors or gauges. I never look mirror to mirror, gauge to gauge, or mirror to gauge.
