10.5 The equilibrum constant Kc - part 1 Flashcards
What is the equilibrium constants Kc?
A measure of the position of equilibrium; the magnitude of an equilibrium constant indicates whether there are more reactants or more products in a equilibrium system
What is the equation to calculate Kc?
[products] / [reactants]
What does using square brackets mean?
Shorthand for ‘the concentration of’
What are the units for concentration?
mol/dm3 (mol-1dm3)
What does a Kc value of 1 tell us?
Indicates the position of equilibrium is halfway between the reactants and products
What does a Kc value of greater than 1 tell us?
Indicates the position of the equilibrium is towards the products (the right hand side), the concentration of the products is greater as Kc increases compared to the reactants
What does a Kc value of less than 1 tell us?
Indicates the position of the equilibrium is towards the reactants (the left hand side)
