104.3 Ims Comms Flashcards
What is the most common means of communication?
Radio
What is the advantage of face to face, and when should it be used?
It reduces radio traffic and frees up the radio channel. It should be utilized when:
-the IC wishes to speak to those personnel who are in their immediate span of control
-any designated person within the ims is speaking with the personnel within their span of control
What is the advantage of radio communication, and when should it be used?(3)
Radio communication allows everyone to be apart of the communication process. It should be used when:
-face to face communication is not practical
-the use of the radio is needed to communicate with multiple personnel
-when communicating benchmarks to command or Toronto fire
In order for comms to assign a second fireground channel at the same incident, what must there be?
Another on scene vehicle equipped with a DVRS, set to that channel. When changing channels or zones, the DVRS will turn off. Reactivation of the DVRS will be required when a new channel is assigned
A communications identifier for teams operating at an incident shall be ___
The portable radio identifier
The IC may assign a radio alias per the ___ or ___of the sector officer
Tactical objective or geographical area
What must be done if the sector officer and aide are working in a controlled area?
Their portable radio identifier must be logged on the entry control board
Whether the team is identified by their radio identifier or function at the incident is ultimately the decision of the ___?
IC
What are the two main reasons for using portable radio identifiers?
- Emergency call button- when activated this feature will only display the portable radio identifier on the communications center console
- Familiarity - personnel automatically tune their individual listening skills to identify the radio transmissions pertinent to their assigned portable/vehicle/station call signs
Who is responsible for ensuring TF comms reassigns the radio Identifier for a spare/replacement radio?
The firefighter responsible for the new portable radio
What radio transmissions must use a mayday procedure? (4)
Any communication pertaining to a firefighter who is:
-trapped,
-missing,
-has sustained life threatening injury or
-is in a life threatening situation
When radio silence is announced, what radio messages are allowed? (3)
-mayday/evacuate/urgent transmissions
-messages critical to RIT rescue ops
-info as requested by the IC, RIT sector officer or RIT
What happens when an emergency button is depressed? (3)
-an alarm is activated in the communications center
-the on scene DVRs recieves notification of the distress
-the radio system automatically allocates priority of transmission for the emergency activated portable radio when on a TAC channel. Priority will also be given on the F/g channel if the DVRs is in range
If a PAR status is requested, and not all personnel can be accounted for, what will the transmission include?
If personnel cannot be accounted for, the PAR status report must clearly indicate the number of personnel not accounted for and must not include the word PAR
T/F once a mayday gas been initiated, the FFs should try to remain in the same location if safe to do so
True
If the firefighter needing assistance in a mayday changes location, what should happen?
The IC or Ritso should be notified as soon as possible
If a firefighter hears a pass sounding for an extended period of time and is unable to ascertain where it is coming from, what should happen?
A firefighter must communicate a mayday if a pass alarm is sounding in full alarm mode for an extended period of time. This transmission may not necessarily identify the ff with the problem. The IC will conduct a par to find out whose pass alarm is activated
What FG channel does channel 16 transmit on?
FG 6
Who remains on the assigned radio channel after crews are instructed to switch to channel 16 by TFS comms after comms is instructed to do so by the IC? (5)
-firefighter initiating the mayday
-any fire crews aiding in the rescue
-rit
-ritso
-TFS comms
Why is radio silence preferable to changing to channel 16 at subway incidents?
A DVRs is most likely out of range at most subway incidents
T/F TFS comms must inform the IC that ch16 is unavailable due to another incident?
True
During a mayday, what if their is no DVRS on scene? What if there is and it’s available?
-radio silence
-upon confirmation that a DVRs is on scene and active, now IC can direct Toronto fire to announce with alert tones that all crews with the exception of RIT are to switch to channel 16, if required
Who can IC assign grab lives procedure to?
Someone directly under their command or to communications
If a DVRs is not available, or the IC chooses not to use ch16, what shall the IC do?
The incident commander shall request Toronto fire to announce with alert tones “attention all crews at (location) a mayday has been called, maintain radio silence
If TF comms receives an emergency signal, what must they do? (3)
-Immediately try to establish radio communication with the ff with that radio
-if unable to establish comms, inform the IC of the signal and radio identifier and prompt IC if radio silence should be initiated
-implement the mayday protocol as the IC dictates
What radio transmissions shall use the urgent protocol ?
Any communication pertaining to the existence of a dangerous condition or a life threatening situation
